💙 Thank You, Mahela! Mumbai Indians Bid an Emotional Farewell to Their Three-Time IPL Champion Coach

A decade of trust, three IPL titles and a legacy built on calm leadership. The Mumbai Indians journey with Mahela Jayawardene reaches a new chapter.

Some cricket partnerships are remembered for trophies. Others are remembered for the culture they build, the people they inspire and the identity they leave behind. For Mumbai Indians (MI), Mahela Jayawardene's association has been about all three.

On 17 October 2026, Mumbai Indians announced that Jayawardene would be stepping down as head coach, bringing his decade-long association with the franchise to a close. The announcement marks the end of a significant chapter for one of the Indian Premier League's most recognisable teams.

Jayawardene's MI story was never limited to the boundary ropes. From guiding the men's team to IPL glory to helping shape the franchise's wider global cricketing philosophy, his contribution extended well beyond match-day tactics.

🏆 Three IPL Titles, One Lasting Legacy

Jayawardene's first stint as Mumbai Indians head coach began in 2017. His leadership became part of a hugely successful period for the franchise, with MI winning three IPL titles under his guidance.

Those achievements helped strengthen Mumbai Indians' reputation for combining experienced match-winners with a strong team culture. A successful IPL campaign demands more than individual brilliance: preparation, communication, player roles and decisions under pressure all matter.

Jayawardene returned to the head coach position in 2024, beginning a second stint that ran through 2026. Across both periods, he played a defining role in the team's environment and approach to the game.

🧠 More Than a Head Coach: The MI Culture Builder

In its farewell announcement, Mumbai Indians highlighted Jayawardene's calm leadership, integrity and love for cricket. The franchise also credited him with fostering a strong team environment based on discipline, collaboration and a team-first attitude.

These qualities are particularly important in a tournament such as the IPL, where teams face constant pressure, a demanding schedule and intense scrutiny. A coach must manage different personalities, communicate clear roles and help players stay focused through both winning and difficult phases.

His contribution was therefore not measured only by the result of a single match. It was also reflected in the cricketing philosophy and working environment he helped develop within the MI setup.

Nita Ambani also expressed gratitude for his commitment over the years, saying that the MI family would cherish their shared journey and memories. She added that Jayawardene would always remain part of the franchise's #OneFamily.

🌍 From Mumbai to the Global MI Family

Jayawardene's influence expanded in 2022, when he took on the role of Global Head of Performance. His responsibilities included overseeing the MI franchise's expansion across global leagues and working with coaching teams to develop a shared cricketing philosophy.

During this period, the wider MI family celebrated title-winning campaigns involving Mumbai Indians Women, MI New York and MI Emirates. The franchise credited this wider programme with contributing to its growing global legacy.

MI team	Part of the wider legacy
Mumbai Indians Women	Title-winning success in women's franchise cricket
MI New York	A title-winning chapter in the global MI setup
MI Emirates	Another title-winning team within the MI family

This global role underlined that Jayawardene's association with the franchise was about more than coaching one team. It involved helping different squads work towards a common cricketing identity across competitions and countries.

💙 Mahela's Goodbye: Gratitude, Pride and Memories

Jayawardene's farewell message reflected the personal importance of the relationship. He described Mumbai Indians as a special part of his journey for more than a decade and thanked the players, coaching staff, fans, Nita Ambani and Akash Ambani for their trust and support.

He also reflected on the unforgettable moments, challenges and shared achievements that shaped his time with the franchise. His message was one of pride in what the team had built and gratitude for the people who made the experience memorable.

Rather than focusing solely on the end of his coaching tenure, his words looked back at a journey that brought together trophies, relationships and a shared sense of belonging.

👀 What Does This Mean for Mumbai Indians Ahead of IPL 2027?

Jayawardene's departure opens a new chapter for Mumbai Indians as the franchise looks towards the 2027 IPL season. The announcement does not, by itself, confirm who will take over the head coach position or how the wider coaching structure will change.

For MI, the next steps will involve deciding how best to carry forward the team's culture, support its players and prepare for the challenges of a new season.

• Head coach succession: Fans will be watching for an official announcement on the next appointment.
• Team continuity: Maintaining a consistent approach while adapting to new leadership will be important.
• IPL 2027 preparations: Coaching decisions will form part of the build-up to the next season.
• The MI identity: The franchise will look to preserve the collaborative, team-first culture highlighted in its tribute.
